Clinch does a good job with characterization. I like how the characters emerge a little at a time. The level of the narrative is amazing in places, but I gave up on the book without finishing it, because it was just too taxing -- for summer reading anyway.

I couldn't wait to find out how in the world the author would pull all the threads back together.  Incredibly, he managed to do it in a conclusion that worked for me.  This volume had less action and more exposition than the others. There is a plot, although it is not readily apparent. The reader kind of has to figure out what it was at the end. 

The book is about the characters: the most interesting collection of characters I've encountered in a long time.  Each one is a totally believable and "real" person, while being completely unique, quirky and even occasionally bizarre.

The writing is lyrical, poetic. Haunting in places. Glorious in others.  The style and the narrator's voice are totally appropriate to, and strong enough to handle, its lofty themes and vast scale. The beauty of the alternate version of the Priestly prologue to the book of Genesis matches that of the original.
