The Attraction of "Free" -- ?

I self-published Always Faithful and The Way Home on Smashwords in October 2009. Since then, I've sold 18 copies, and people have downloaded 34 samples between the two.

Marianne's Vacation became available for free on January 2, 2010. By January 14, 143 people have downloaded copies.

Is Romance that popular? Is the attraction it's free-ness?

What -- if anything -- might this tell me?? I have no idea. Nevertheless, I'm thrilled that perhaps a few people might enjoy reading the story half as much as I enjoyed writing it.

  1. I don't have an answer to your question, but I bet it feels good to know readers are downloading your books. And, frankly, I think self-publishing and creating e-books is phenomenal. They both sound very intimidating.

On my blog today, I gave you the One Lovely Blog Award. It's yours to pass on if you'd like (or not).

  3. Hi Meredith, I clicked over from Helen's blog. Interesting how readers have downloaded your book, and how nice to know they are choosing and reading your work. It's great to be building your audience and knowing your book is reaching its market!

  4. Thanks for stopping by, Joanne.

I'm reluctant to get too excited about people downloading a free e-book, yet. Time will tell if the folks who download the free books will turn into buyers.

Even if they don't, it's fun to know that the stories I dreamed up are in circulation at some level.

  5. No matter how your work gets to readers, it's gratifying to know someone is reading. The only thing better is when you get reader feedback. That sorta closes the loop.

    Best Wishes Galen.

  6. I agree, Galen. I doubt that everyone who downloaded my stories will read them. But, it's at least a possibility. That thrills me.

Feedback is still in my future. That's both scary and exciting.
